As our journey begins, we will cruise east along Kapiolani Park toward the Diamond Head Crater Lookout. After taking a few pics, we will cruise through the Kahala neighborhood leading us onto Kalanianaole Highway heading in the direction of the Hanauma Bay Nature Reserve. This will begin our trek up Oahu’s Ka Iwi coast, an amazing coastline stretch including breathtaking panoramic views, lookout points, and unspoiled beaches that showcase Hawaii’s natural beauty at its absolute finest. During the winter months (late December – early April), we may even be lucky to see a few Humpback Whales frolicking in the waters offshore!
Next, a short drive down the Pali Highway will reward us with a view from the Nuuanu Pali Lookout, we will then continue north through Kaneohe along Kamehameha Highway toward the Valley of the Temples, leading us to the Byodo-In Temple. When we are done and continue onward, we will travel through the rural communities of Kahaluu and Waikane on our way to Tropical Farms where you can experience their world-famous Macadamia Nuts. Then, just short of our stop at Kualoa Ranch, we will visit Chinaman’s Hat, an iconic cone-shaped basalt islet situated in Kaneohe Bay.
As we hele (go; move) on and before stopping for lunch at the Old Kahuku Sugar Mill, we will continue to work our way North through the small communities of Kaaawa and Hauula, stopping by Laie State Wayside Park for a few pics of a natural Sea Arch, as well as cruise by the Laie Hawaii Temple, which is sometimes referred to as the “Taj Mahal of the Pacific”.
Once we have had lunch and had some time to recharge the batteries a bit, we will pass by the Turtle Bay Resort, before we are off to Oahu’s World Famous North Shore Beaches. During the winter months, waves at Sunset Beach, Pipeline, and Waimea Bay can reach 30 feet or more in height. Laniakea Beach is a popular spot to see Hawaiian Sea Turtles lounging in the sand.
Next, we will cross the historic Rainbow Bridge over the Anahulu River into old Haleiwa Town. Here, there are several boutique shops, galleries, and places to eat. The hugely popular Matsumoto Shave Ice is located in the town, however, Aoki’s Shave Ice is another solid choice just across the street and won’t have as long of a line.
Our departure from Haleiwa Town will take us 10 minutes down the road to the Dole Plantation. Dole Plantation’s Pineapple Garden Maze is the largest in the world. Once we are done exploring Dole, we will stop at Green World Coffee Farm for all things coffee. Ko Hana Distillers.
Lastly, before we say A Hui Hou (until we meet again), we will take a cruise through Honolulu, past the Hawaii State Capitol, Iolani Palace, Aliiolani Hale (to see the famed gold-leaf statue of King Kamehameha the Great), Honolulu Hale, and Kawaiahao Church. Kawaiahao Church was constructed between 1836 – 1842 using approximately 14,000 half-ton slabs of coral rock quarried off the southern coast of Oahu.
